The word cool has now been redefined, and how? Using your hair! TOI finds that its one cool job to be a hairstylist now.
Aamir Khans trying his hand at it, Abhishek Bachchans flaunting it and SRKs putting his money on it. No, this is not some Bollywood blockbuster that we are talking about. Snip, snip, snip... Is that hint enough? Yes, we are talking about the mane gurus, the guys who have brought about a sea change in what we previously thought was only a hajams work.
1x1 polls

Jawed Habib, of Habibs says, The right kind of hair cut can make someone look dumb, smart or even evil. In films, it plays an important role in portraying a character. Knowing about the character helps us decide on the look.
No wonder the hairstyles of actors are so much in the news these days, be it AB Jrs Raavana cut, Aamirs Mohawk style in TZP or his Ghajini cut. Why, the reticent Bollywood superstar even promoted his movie in a most unusual way in Delhi by giving Delhiites a Ghajini haircut. And people were sporting enough to get their hair buzzed by the superstar.
Osh Bhabani, director of B Blunt Salon, says, We have worked in Dil Chahta Hai, Rock On!!, Lakshya and Ghajini, where a great deal of importance was given to hairstyles. When we give a particular hairstyle, we make sure its slightly edgy, so that it catches up later. Undoubtedly, it helps enhance our brand. I have been in hair styling for the past 10 years and I see that today its no longer a last resort. Even people who have other options are turning to hair styling. Weve been training people for seven to eight years and are busier now.

This mane trend is now making inroads into Tollywood as well. Actor Swastika Mukherjee, whos lately been flaunting a chic cut for her movie 033, says, We see actors attending workshops and concentrating on their scripts but they hardly focus on what they wear, no matter how incongruous it might look on screen. In Tollywood, the new directors and Rituda take great care in portraying a character from hairstyling to the lipstick, or the bindi. For 033, everybody wanted a new look for me, so I thought of trying something short to give a new dimension to my character and to my
personal self. My mother was in a state of shock on seeing my hair, but one good thing that came out of it was that people on the streets had a hard time recognising me, even it was for a short while.
Jolly Chandra of Satin Rose, explains, Whenever I give a particular cut to Swastika I do that keeping in mind the character that shes playing.
From serving as a disguise, to making you resemble your favourite star, your hairstylist sure helps you get that right look. So even though barbers may have objected to their profession appearing in the name of the film Billu, the mane story tells a different tale its one cool job to be a hairstylist now.
